The Foundation Year provides students with an understanding of the key aspects of business and management, along with the necessary skills needed to participate in the undergraduate business programmes at level 4, 5 and 6.

To make university education more accessible, we are offering a £1,500 Award to UK and EU undergraduate students starting a BA (Hons) Business programme with a Foundation Year in September 2016.

If you wish to apply for the Foundation Year route, please apply for any of the BA Business programmes and select the four year course option. If your application is successful your first year will be the Foundation Year. 

 
Why this course?
 

The Foundation Year is not a stand-alone programme, as there is no award associated with it; instead, it is an integral part of the four undergraduate business programmes.

This year-long programme of study is designed to provide you with the appropriate study skills and knowledge to prepare you for undergraduate study.

 
Who is this course for?
 
All students who apply for our undergraduate programmes and meet the admissions criteria for the foundation year. They will then be admitted to that year, and if successful progress onto their named award. 
 
How will you learn?
 

VAs well as the curriculum and our learning and teaching strategy, we use guest lectures and ‘live’ workshops to promote independent learning and increase your employability skills.

Lecture and tutorial discussion will focus on case studies, and you will be required to adopt a critical, reflective approach in group activities and assessment exercises.

 
Course structure
 
Programme structure, levels, and credits
All 20 credits, level 3 and delivered over 2 semesters.
 
Academic and Report Writing
 
This is a basic literacy skills module, designed to prepare you for academic study as well as enabling you to develop the skills that employers value in graduates.  
 
Numeracy Skills for Business
 

This module focuses on basic numeracy skills to develop your business mathematical knowledge, encouraging your confidence and appreciation of the subject. It will help you acquire a range of mathematical skills, particularly those that can be applied in the context of business environments.

It also enables you to analyse problems logically, recognise when and how a situation may be represented mathematically, and select an appropriate method to solve the problem. This module provides you with the mathematical knowledge necessary for business studies at undergraduate level.

 
 
Introduction to Finance
 
 

The module gives you a basic understanding of a wide range of important financial accounting, financial management, and management accounting techniques that are relevant to businesses in today's competitive financial environment.

You will examine fundamental finance concepts and learn how to analyse and use published financial statements, giving you a basis for the Year 1 accounting and finance module. 

 
Introduction to Management
 

With this module, you will gain a foundation in management and will understand the issues faced by contemporary business organisations. It addresses important theories of management, the management process, and how it is affected by different contexts, cultures, and settings.

The module sets the scene for later modules in the management subject area; providing a strong foundation while covering the complexities and risks involved in management practice.

 
 
Introduction to Human Resource Management
 
 

The module gives you a good grounding in human resource management and its role in organisations. It introduces key practices and policies used in the management of people, including staff selection, performance management, and rewards and compensation.

The module will explore the main theories and concepts of human resource management, as well as examining how it can affect issues such as performance, leadership, and motivation. You will also learn about organisational structures and organisational change. 

 
Introduction to Marketing
 

You will explore the importance of marketing and its key concepts with this module, learning about how the practise of marketing influences competitiveness through the use of marketing principles and techniques. You will also learn how to analyse situations to meet organisational and marketing objectives.

The module explores the influence of the customer, the importance of market research, and the need for an integrated marketing mix to achieve marketing objectives.

More technical topics such as segmentation, targeting and positioning, strategic planning, and the application of marketing tools will also be explored along with the importance of a strong brand and a unique product offering.

Entry requirements
 

Standard entry requirements:

  • Minimum of 80 UCAS points from an A Level or 100 UCAS points from two A Levels.
  • 5 GCSE’s Grades A - C including English, and Grade D or above in Maths, with the exception of Business and Finance for which applicants will be required to have GCSE Maths Grade C or above.
  • For international students, we require an English language level equivalent to IELTS 5.5 or above, with a minimum of 5.0 in each component.

Non-standard entry requirements for students with no evidence of GCSE’s, but who do have an A Level:

  • Minimum of 80 UCAS points from an A’ Level or 100 UCAS points from two A Levels.  
  • Maths (Numeracy) and English GCSE equivalents.
  • A CV which includes relevant supplementary information.

Non-standard entry requirements for students with no formal qualifications - applicants will need to complete and pass:

  • A numeracy test
  • An English and Business comprehension/acumen test
  • An interview

Students will also need to have 2 years appropriate work experience and show evidence in a CV.
